Purpose: Unique ways to find a midwife who cater towards your and your family's specific needs and next steps once you find your provider.

Search in your 'backyard':
Health insurance providers recognize the benefit of midwifery care: call the company or search the site to get a list of in-network providers and/or 3rd party providers they partner with
Birthing centers - even if you don't have one near you, call the closest one! The birthing support community is very close knit so there is a high chance they can provide a referral
State/Local government - programs dedicated to financially supporting families
Yelp - a great way to read reviews
Instagram - with IG's search capabilities becoming from sophisticated, it's easier to find individuals without a specific handle in mind. Example of searches: (geo location)midwives, midwifery care,
FB Groups - groups connecting midwives to the community, midwife groups who can help you get connected through their network
Internet search: "Midwife near me". Even if they don't have any openings for your due date, they will most likely provide a referral!
Organizations
American College of Nurse-Midwives: https://ams.midwife.org/web-directory/1
California Association of Licensed Midwives: https://californiamidwives.org/findamidwife
Points to note:
Interview your midwife and don't hold back on your questions!
Prepare to pay out of pocket for midwives out-of-network or independent of insurance companies (aka private practice)
Supplemental insurance and scholarships/grants are available to help cover the financial cost
Find someone you not only trust with your care but also feel comfortable being vulnerable with, sharing your hopes, fears, and deepest concerns
